Cortes Trip Report and YT Smackdown Starter Kit

Postby Errin » September 1st, 2017, 12:17 pm

Made it out to Cortes on the Peace Boat last week during the break in the weather and scored big time. On our first day, we were rewarded with glassy conditions, tons of bait and more tuna in one day than I've ever seen before. Water was in the upper 60's and the viz was spectacular. Current was moderate to heavy depending on the tidal swing with heavy current making it tough to keep up at times.

There were all kinds of pelagics coming through including Bonita, Barracuda, Yellowtail and Bluefin Tuna. Once I got to the edge of the bait and starting throwing my flasher, I was seeing tuna every 3-5 minutes and almost every time I threw the flasher. They were coming through in singles, doubles and larger schools as well. Also had mixed grade yellowtail up to about 30 pounds or so. We put a ton of fish on the boat including YT, WSB and three Bluefin. The tuna were a little over football size - about 20-25 pounds. My goal on this trip was to bring home the tuna so I am very happy with the outcome.

It's lucky for those of you in the Yellowtail smackdown that my attention was focused on BFT rather than YT cause I was passing on 30+ pound YT to get more shots on tuna. I could have loaded up the stringer with slugs but they were not the droids I was looking for this trip.

Ended it with a nice little pair of BFT and a few YT up to 27 pounds. First submittal to get the Smackdown going and give you guys something to shoot for. I know you're all capable of shooting bigger fish in your sleep but know that I have another trip booked out to Cortes in three weeks. Round two coming up!

Oh damn how did I miss this. What a trip! Grats on the smackdown leader for now, but those tuna are the real prize here! Did you have to lead your shots or were they fairly tame? Look at those norcal kooks... At least we have you repping the socal scene. :bowrofl:
